Introduction: The Digital Valve

A web server crashing is an inconvenience. A water treatment plant crashing is a catastrophe. Industrial facilities use SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems to open physical valves and control electrical grids. Historically, these ran on private serial cables. Today, for convenience, many use IP addresses.

The Shodan Danger

The problem arises when an engineer gives a SCADA controller a Public IP address so they can check readings from home. Security tools like Shodan easily identify these exposed controllers. A hacker on the other side of the planet can find the IP and potentially send a command to shut down a city's power grid.

Conclusion

Convenience is the enemy of critical security. Industrial systems must be strictly isolated from the public IP space to prevent physical disaster. Check your external exposure here.
